Romantic, Bohemian, Rock & Roll, Polished? Here are some of my favorite looks for Prom 2015.
It’s that time again! Prom season is coming and we’re so excited to be curling, braiding and pinning again! I love letting my creativity flow and prom hair is all about being creative, functional and inspired. I have been scouring the internet for ideas and a few pictures really have me feeling that prom fever….
1. The good ol’ fashioned blow out
You can’t go wrong with big beautiful hair. The only downside is you might get a little hot if you’re going to be dancing. Just keep that in mind.
2. The braided up-do
This look has a playful romance to it. Definitely a favorite.
3. Messy French twist
This look has a very relaxed feel. Perfect for a laid back girl.
4. Glam Curls
Smooth, soft and shiny curls or waves give you that instant glam look. Pair it will a soft smoky eye and bold lips and you’re sure to turn some heads.
5. Braided half-up
If you want to show off your long pretty hair but don’t want to have to deal with it being in your face this look is for you!
6. Mohawk braid
For the edgy, funky girl who wants her wild side to show while looking fan-freakin-tastic.
7. The Romantic faux-bob (or real bob for girls with short hair)
This look keeps the hair off of your shoulders but has a soft, delicate romance about it. I love this look!
Writing this post has really made me realize how prom hair has changed since I went to prom and I’ll definitely say it has changed for the better!! Have fun out there girls and be sure to stay safe!

Get that sun-kissed look just in time for Summer!
You may have been seeing the word “balayage” a lot lately when scrolling through hair pictures on Pinterest and Instagram. It has been taking the salon industry by storm. But what is it exactly? Balayage is a technique for highlighting in which dye or lightener is painted on the hair in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, Miranda Kerr and Lauren Conrad have been seen sporting this look. It’s great because since it is a very natural look, it lowers the amount of maintenance required to keep it looking good. If you decide to add a few lighter pieces to your natural color, you only need to come in every 8-10 weeks to get a refresh and/or toner (if you and your stylist decide to dye over your natural color, you will have to come in every 6 weeks for a retouch on your new growth).
Another great thing about balayage is, it looks great no matter how light you get the highlights. So this makes transitioning from very dark hair to a lighter look a lot more laid back. A big misconception is that unless you get the hair very blonde, you will leave the salon with orange hair. My dear sweet readers, that is what toner is for! It is the holy grail of any lightening service. So, after a few sessions with your stylist, you too can have those beautiful blonde highlights that are blended and graduated without compromising the integrity of your hair and without having an entire head of a color that you aren’t crazy about.
What to do before and after your balayage experience
(These rules really go for any color service you’re thinking about getting.)
Before your appointment:
1. Gather some photos of what you ultimately would like. Having a visual will help you and your stylist get on the same page. Your idea of honey colored highlights might not be the same as theirs!
2. Stop dying your hair, preferably months before. Any artificial color on your hair will slow down the lightening process and can lead to uneven lifting.
After your appointment:
1. Shampoo with a sulfate-free shampoo like Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics. Sulfates will fade your color faster. Condition with a hydrating and pH-balanced conditioner made for hair that has been lightened like Pureology’s Perfect 4 Platinum Conditioner.
2. Use a heat protectant before blow drying, flat ironing or curling. The heat can not only damage your hair (especially lightened hair) but it can also fade or brown-out color faster.
3. Use a moisturizing mask once a week. I love Redken’s Blonde Idol Mask.

I’m talking about makeovers! Spring is in the hair and if you’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to try a new look, I say go for it! We all know that when we have a bad hair day or if we’re not particularly thrilled about the current look we have, it has a negative impact on our confidence and self esteem. A makeover can be a great way to become more open minded and discover new things about yourself too! Big changes like going from blonde to brunette or long to short as well as small changes like the addition of a side swept fringe or a few highlights around the face can make a world of a difference. So get out of your comfort zone and let the magic happen. The road to self discovery is a long one, why not look beautiful on the way there?
How do you find the right look for you? How do you know what shade of red to go for or whether or not you can “pull off” the copper highlights or textured bob you saw online? Consulting with your stylist is a very crucial step to any makeover. It helps us determine what styles are realistic for your lifestyle, what colors work with your skin tone, the steps we must take to get you from point A to point B and so forth. Coming into the appointment with images of colors or hairstyles you like (even if you only like a part of a certain look) helps immensely. It makes sure you are both on the same page. After consulting, your stylist will give you their professional suggestions. I like to refer to it as creating a road map. Things we take into consideration are: facial shape, head shape, skin tone, skin undertone, eye color, etc. A thorough consultation can be the difference between a look to love and a look to lose.
We have been seeing a lot of celebrity hair transformations lately. Kim Kardashian’s famous leap to the blonde side and more recently, Christina Aguilera’s switch from blonde bombshell to sultry brunette have been all over social media lately. Such a drastic color change is bound to turn some heads. If you’re looking to flip the script this is the answer.
Popping up everywhere are the bold, fun, vibrant colors. Katy Perry, Nicole Richie, Kelly Osbourne, Kylie Jenner and now Hilary Duff have all been sporting the bright fashion colors that we all can’t stop looking at. I know it’s not plausible for all of us to go head first and dye all of our hair unnatural colors but if you’re a little curious there are more temporary options to test the waters. Redken’s Color Rebel Hair Makeup makes it possible to paint a little bit (or a lot of bit) of funky color onto your hair. Available in violet, red, coral, pink and gold, it rinses out after two shampoos. Another option is extensions. You can purchase individual wefts of colorful hair to add into your hairdo for those days you are really needing some excitement.
A big change can be a hard pill to swallow but, after taking that leap of faith and seeing yourself in a completely different way, it can be a very fulfilling experience. Going from hair down to your waist to hair above your shoulders sounds terrifying and panic-attack-inducing but you’d be surprised. When you get a truly flattering haircut, it will make all of your best features come alive. Right now the “Lob” is gaining mass popularity. It’s a wonderful compromise when you’re wanting to try a short-er cut without going in full force.
All over color changes are some of the most fun appointments for the stylist but the most stressful for the client. But just like a good haircut can bring out your best features, good color makes everything POP! Your eyes can look bigger and brighter and your skin can look more radiant from a color that compliments you perfectly. I love creating new looks for clients and giving them what they need to feel confident and discover new positive attitudes they may not have had about themselves before.
But just like big changes, small changes (adding a few highlights around the face or adding a side swept fringe) can create a whole new look. Plus, these services tend to be quick, easy and generally less expensive. Spring time always brings the need to have a lighter and brighter style. Women often come in thinking they need a full head of highlights to achieve it when in actuality they would look much better with just a few highlights. This can take a boring one dimensional color to a whole other level. It gives you that sun kissed look that is very natural and soft but it also gives you that change that you have been dying for. A color gloss is another easy way to add a little something to your look. They are semi permanent and can add just a little boost of tone and shine. The color gradually fades, taking away the commitment permanent color requires.
Lastly, we can’t forget about the guys. The male grooming industry has seen a sudden boom in the past few years. Men are becoming more and more interested in not only getting a haircut but getting a look. I tell my male clients, when you sit in my hair I am not just cutting your hair, I am taking your personal style and creating a look that portrays it. It’s becoming a lot more than “#2 on the sides and finger length on top”. Men are becoming more daring and more expressive and I love it! Guys, don’t be afraid to leave the haircut you’ve had for the past 10 years at the door when you come in because I guarantee when you leave you will feel more confident than ever.
So, if you’re still wondering if you should dye your hair or cut it all off or if you have been feeling the urge for change, there’s no time like the present. Grab the bull by the horns and take the plunge. I’m sure you will be happy that you did and you might even learn a thing or two about yourself in the process.

Blondes Don’t Have All the Fun!
Introducing Redken’s new Carmin’R dye!
We are all about deep, dimensional, vibrant reds. Whether you want permanent or demi permanent, all over color, highlights, balayage or ombre, we have something to suit you.
How it Works:
This revolutionary dye molecule penetrates the hair core then expands, trapping it inside the strand. This creates color that is truer to tone and lasts up to 40 shampoos!
Proper Aftercare Makes a Difference:
After you dye your hair it is very important that you take the time to properly care for it. After the color service, ask your stylist about a Redken Chemistry Treatment. This treatment will lock and seal the color in, as well as deep condition your hair.
Nothing will fade your color faster than a low quality shampoo. I recommend Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics line. It’s sulfate free and designed for color treated hair.
Lastly, a couple of tips for keeping your color radiant: shampoo less frequently and always cover your hair when in the sun. Shampooing too often will not only fade your color with a quickness, but it will also leave it feeling dry and lose it’s luster. The sun’s harsh UV rays will also contribute to color fading. So this summer be sure to wear a hat or scarf to protect your color investment!

Exciting Things Are Happening!
With 2015 in full swing there are so many new and exciting things happening at Rio!
We officially have Redken’s brand-spankin’-new Blonde Idol color line. The line includes high-lift conditioning hair color, a blue oil lightening system and the base breakers. What this means for you is lighter, brighter blondes without the brassiness and without the damage! Each product in this line is ultra conditioning so your hair is not left dry and lifeless but bright, lustrous and healthy.
“Sombre”, balayage, high lights and all over blonde will never go out of style.
All over Instagram and Pinterest are pictures of beautifully lightened, perfectly blended blondes. People, especially those of us with naturally darker hair, think it’s impossible to have that hair on their heads. That is, while having hair still attached to their head! This color line makes it possible. Now, don’t get me wrong, if you have jet black hair, don’t think you’ll be a platinum blonde just like that! But you can gradually become lighter and brighter without the dreaded brassy orange monster showing it’s ugly face all over your head.
We have the technology!
Each product in this line includes new technology that include: cationic polymers designed to smooth the hair fibers, violet leaf extract to condition and optimize the health of the hair and ceramides that repair and seal the hair to protect the color.
What this means for you is the beautiful lasting blonde you want without the dryness other methods can cause. Also, with haircolor that lifts and tones at the same time and a base breaker that only takes 10 minutes to process you won’t feel like you’ve spent an eternity in the salon.
Check out these results!!:

Do you want to hear a secret?
Well it’s not really a secret….
The salon’s public enemy #1 is….box dye!
You know. the kind you get at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart etc. No, it’s not that we are greedy and want you to be chemically dependent on us forever. The facts are that at-home dye kits can make any future service you get 10x more difficult (especially if you want to lighten your hair), they are very aggressive and can damage your hair without proper after care, and are VERY unpredictable.
There’s a lot more to color than you may think. Your colorist evaluates your hair and creates a formula customized for you. There’s a lot to consider such as previous color, the condition of your hair, your natural color level, your percentage of grey, whether or not you will want to change your color again and so forth. Also, you may notice that sometimes your stylist will use more than one color formula on you!
A common mishap of box dye is the dreaded “hot root”. Let’s say you want to go a little lighter for summer. You’ve been dying your hair for a while now and you figure if you put this light brown over your medium brown hair it will be fine. WRONG. What will happen is all the new growth will be nice and light (and probably a bit on the brassy side) and the rest of your hair will be nice and…the same color it was before. On the flip side, let’s say your ends are a little more damaged or porous than the rest of your hair, they will soak up more dye and become darker!
Another common mishap of box dye is the “I didn’t like my haircolor/highlights, so I colored over it myself.” This one can be especially frustrating to stylists because if you are unsatisfied with our work PLEASE LET US KNOW! We want you to be happy and feel beautiful! Putting dye on yourself is especially risky over blondes/highlights because after a shampoo or two your highlights will be whatever the undertone of that dye was, be it blue, green, orange or red.
Color corrections take hours and can be quite expensive.
So if you want to go from the picture on the left to the picture on the right, for the love of God, see a professional!

It’s Finally Here!
Redken’s Extreme Length System is now available in the salon!
I am very excited to announce that we now have Redken’s Extreme Length system in the salon for purchase. It. Is. AMAZING! If you have been trying to grow your hair and feel like it is taking an eternity (like myself) then I urge you to pick it up and try it.
Hair grows 3-6″ in one year. The key to getting the maximum growth of 6″ is by keeping your hair healthy. Extreme Length contains biotin and a protein complex which forms bonds around the hair fibers to strengthen and preserve length. If your hair is growing at the root but breaking off the ends you’re not going to make any progress! Not only does this system make your hair feel fantastic but it reduces the appearance of split ends.
Follow these 3 steps:
1. Shampoo with Redken’s Extreme shampoo.
2. Towel dry hair and apply the Extreme Length Primer. Leave on 2-5 minutes and rinse.
3. Apply the Extreme Length Sealer on your ends. It can be applied to damp or dry hair.
If you’re interested in trying it out first, book an appointment with one of our stylist for an in-salon treatment (service price: $20). Mention this blog post for $5 off!
Rio Takes Las Vegas!
This past week seven of our amazingly talented stylists traveled to the FABULOUS Las Vegas to attend the 2015 Redken Symposium. This is the largest single-manufacturer education event in the world! They left wide-eyed and eager to learn and returned more motivated and inspired than ever!
Kris, Laura, Megan, Melissa, Misty, Shelby and myself (Jess) embarked on this adventure last Friday January 23rd. Once we arrived we immediately began exploring this beautiful city. To us there was so much to see and do and so little time!
The first night we were there truly was a magical night because one of our stylists received the surprise of her life! Our little Meggy GOT ENGAGED! It really was the most romantic thing I have ever witnessed. We are so happy for her and cannot wait to be with her every step of the way!
After a couple of days of exploring Sunday rolled around and it was time to get to work! We all visited Sam Villa’s Hairshow, an amazing blow dry bar, to get #redkenready for the opening event that night.
Of course we had the best seats in the house for the show! It was an amazing display of all the educators, artists and models we would be seeing and learning from the following days in class. I must say, when Redken throws a party, they REALLY throw a party! They pulled out all the stops and made it incredible.
The next day classes began and we were given the opportunity to learn from the most innovative, talented and creative artists from around the world!
We also were able to bring back some goodies! We have a sneak peak at some new products Redken will be releasing this year. We are very excited to be ahead of the game with new styling and color products that will take your hair to the next level.
I know I don’t speak for myself when I say I cannot wait for Redken Symposium 2017! This was one of the greatest experiences of my life and now I’m ready to practice what I’ve learned and create some truly incredible hair!

In honor of our upcoming Blow Dry Bootcamp I decided to do a tutorial on how to create a fun, wearable, everyday blow out at home. As my clients and co-stylists know, I love doing blow outs! Essentially, I am sculpting and molding your hair into a shape that is most flattering for your face. You too can do this and it’s not as hard as you think!
So Lets Get Started!
Before you can begin, you have to have the appropriate products and tools for the job!
The tools you’ll need are: sectioning clips, a detangling brush, a round brush and a styling brush.
My go to brushes are the Wet Brush, Sam Villa’s Thermal Round Brush and Sam Villa’s bamboo styling brush.
After cleansing and conditioning…
Get as much excess moisture out as possible with your towel and use your Wet Brush to get out all the tangles.
First, (shake well!) spray on your Pillow Proof Express Primer. Immediately after, apply your Full Frame 07 Volumizing Mousse liberally through the hair and at the scalp (especially in the crown area of your head).
Next, dry your hair to 80% dry. Be sure to get the hair at the scalp! (This step is very important! It makes your life a whole lot easier when we’re ready to start using the round brush!)
After you’re 80% dry,
Clip up and out of the way the hair above your ears.
Here is where it gets a little tricky but with some practice you’ll be a pro in no time. For these steps I recommend turning your head to the side so it is easier for you to reach the hair in the back of your head. You want to be sure to keep good tension on your hair as this is what makes it nice and smooth. Once the hair is completely dry (and I mean COMPLETELY dry) use your brush like a roller and roll the hair up while keeping the heat on it. Once rolled up, switch to the cool setting on your blow dryer to set the curl. Pull your brush down and out leaving a nice, smooth, loose curl.
The next two sections are the hair above the ears. Isolate the hair at the very top of your head for the final section. Again, I suggest tilting your head to the side so you can get maximum volume and so your arms don’t fall off! You want to dry the hair coming straight OUT from the head. Notice the aerial picture in the upper right corner of the collage. I am pulling the hair straight out from the head here. Again, use your brush like a roller, heat and cool, leaving a smooth, loose curl.
The final section is the top of the head. Blow dry this section straight out from the head as well. Unless you have either short hair or really long arms you will want to bend at the waist to be able to do this easier. Again, use the brush as a roller, heat and cool.
When you stand back up you should look like a crazy person with crazy hair (but with great volume!)
Next you want to break out your styling brush and tame that hair down. Focus on smoothing it out and molding the hair into a unified shape.
Finally, using your Wind Blown 05, spray the interior of your hair. Lift your layers and spray liberally into the inside of your style. This will give you more volume and body and ultimately create a wind blown effect. Finish the look with some Forceful 23 hairspray for lasting hold.
Congratulations, beautiful! You’re done!
