Still Shots from Hair by Misty
Long, wavy hair is always a great summer look and has been very popular so far this year. By adding highlights, we can add even more dimension and style to your haircut.
Go for a lot of contrast or sombre for a more natural sun kissed look.
Shades EQ Color Gloss
This quick versatile service can change or enhance your look without compromising your hair and without long-term commitment.
Is your hair looking dull and faded? Then a color gloss is just what you need! All it takes is 20 minutes for Redken’s Shades EQ semi-permanent color to restore shine and vibrancy to your hair color. Do you like your current color but it’s just lacking shine? No problem, you have the option of a clear gloss which can help your color last longer and create dazzling shine.
For my clients who come in every 6 weeks to do a root touch up, I always refresh their ends with a color gloss so the color on the ends look just as new and vibrant as the fresh color at their roots.
Has your blonde turned a little too yellow or are your highlights looking a little brassy? Not only does Shades EQ offer vibrant colors to refresh but they also offer delicate, light colors to tone blondes while conditioning at the same time!
Are you blonde but not crazy about the tone your hair is or want to try a different shade of blonde? Maybe you’ve always wanted to try strawberry blonde, or you want to be a cooler or even silvery blonde? The results are endless because your colorist can create custom tones just for you!
Another problem I have encountered behind the chair is someone who comes in who is entirely TOO blonde. I’m talking overly lightened almost white highlights. This can make your hair look dull, drab and honestly….DEAD. So to add some life back into her hair a delicate gold gloss came to her rescue. A lot of people are afraid of gold tones, but yellow reflects light better than any other hue. You just need the right gold.
3. Quick Change
If you’re craving a change but worried about the commitment of permanent color, a color gloss is the answer. Semi-permanent color gives you vibrant and lustrous results that gradually fade over time. You will not be left with an obvious grow-out line and if you decide to go with a different color next time it will not cause any issues for your colorist.
If grays are your issues but you’re not trying to go the route of permanent color, a color gloss can help blend the grays to make them less obvious. However, if full gray coverage is what you are seeking this service is not for you.
4. Modern Trends
Redken’s Shades EQ color gloss is capable of so much including creating beautiful works of hair art! Some of the latest color trends involve blurring colors together and having a deeper base color to create depth and contrast. Depending on your starting point your colorist may have to take some steps to get your hair to the necessary level to be able to do these techniques.
The above photo is an example of the blur technique. It is a technique where two or more colors are blurred together to create a transition between the two. In this look a blush color and a “peachy” pink color are blurred together with a platinum blonde base color.
The photo to the left is an example of the blur technique using “champagne” and beige tones. This look is a lot more natural and blended but it is the same idea where two tones are blurred together to create a smooth transition.
Another modern look is the shadowed base. Doing this makes blonde hair look like it has more depth and makes hair look more abundant. After a blonding services your colorist can apply this base color while toning the lengths of your hair and blur the two together. This technique is demonstrated in the photo to the right created by Rio hair stylist Laura Carmichael.
The possibilities are endless with Shades EQ! To schedule a consultation with one of our skilled colorists call us at 904-733-8495 or visit us at www.RioHairStudio.com!

Move Over Balayage there’s a New Trend Moving In!
It’s called Ecaille or Tortoise Shell and it is making its way into the salon. It’s inspired by the colors in tortoise shell, rich brown and gold tones. It creates a very natural and sunkissed look for brunettes.
I think the most famous ecaille look belongs to the beautiful Gisele Bündchen. Her hair is so recognizable and has been a photo that has been brought to me many times over. The beauty of it is in how natural and healthy it looks. The colors flow and blend so naturally together that it looks like the sun did most of the lightening. Other celebrities have been sporting the look such as: Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Rose Byrne and Blake Lively. It really is one of my absolute favorite color techniques and if you have been itching for something trendy, fun, different yet natural I definitely recommend it for you!
The technique is especially beautiful when you curl or wave your hair because the lighter pieces reflect light in such a way that makes curls really POP! Also the technique is completely customizable to you. If you want it concentrated more around the face or want it really subtle to just break up darker hair, it is completely up to you.
In the salon I have definitely been playing with this look and the reactions I get from my clients have been amazing. With how fast paced and hectic the world is right now it is great to have low maintenance color that looks better and better with every visit.
As for hair care I recommend, as I do with all of my color clients, a sulfate free shampoo, a protein rich conditioner and a weekly moisturizing mask or treatment. My favorites are: Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo or Redken’s Blonde Idol Shampoo, Redken Extreme Conditioner and Redken Color Extend Magnetics Deep Attraction Mask. These products will ensure that not only you color lasts but you hair is in excellent condition and is getting what it needs to be healthy.
The process starts with a thorough consultation with your colorist. During this consultation your colorist will determine which tones will look best with your features and you will discuss how you like to style your hair, how much time you spend on your hair, and if you participate in any hobbies or activities that may affect your hair. This information will be key when it comes to deciding where to place the high lights and whether or not a haircut will be necessary to achieve the best look for you. Don’t be too shy to ask us questions. We love answering the questions you have and hearing what concerns you may have. When it comes to your hair, I feel like if it concerns you it concerns me as well. After your stylist has gathered the necessary information the color process will begin. Each stylist has their own techniques and preferences when it comes to doing this type of coloring. Just because you saw it done one way on YouTube, that doesn’t mean that is the only way. Your colorist may use plastic wrap or foils or leave the lightener in open air. There are so many ways to get from point A to point B so it is crucial that you trust your colorist.
The versatility of this look is what I absolutely love. If you are interested in getting this look for yourself call us to schedule a consultation with one of our stylists today!

Get that sun-kissed look just in time for Summer!
You may have been seeing the word “balayage” a lot lately when scrolling through hair pictures on Pinterest and Instagram. It has been taking the salon industry by storm. But what is it exactly? Balayage is a technique for highlighting in which dye or lightener is painted on the hair in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, Miranda Kerr and Lauren Conrad have been seen sporting this look. It’s great because since it is a very natural look, it lowers the amount of maintenance required to keep it looking good. If you decide to add a few lighter pieces to your natural color, you only need to come in every 8-10 weeks to get a refresh and/or toner (if you and your stylist decide to dye over your natural color, you will have to come in every 6 weeks for a retouch on your new growth).
Another great thing about balayage is, it looks great no matter how light you get the highlights. So this makes transitioning from very dark hair to a lighter look a lot more laid back. A big misconception is that unless you get the hair very blonde, you will leave the salon with orange hair. My dear sweet readers, that is what toner is for! It is the holy grail of any lightening service. So, after a few sessions with your stylist, you too can have those beautiful blonde highlights that are blended and graduated without compromising the integrity of your hair and without having an entire head of a color that you aren’t crazy about.
What to do before and after your balayage experience
(These rules really go for any color service you’re thinking about getting.)
Before your appointment:
1. Gather some photos of what you ultimately would like. Having a visual will help you and your stylist get on the same page. Your idea of honey colored highlights might not be the same as theirs!
2. Stop dying your hair, preferably months before. Any artificial color on your hair will slow down the lightening process and can lead to uneven lifting.
After your appointment:
1. Shampoo with a sulfate-free shampoo like Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics. Sulfates will fade your color faster. Condition with a hydrating and pH-balanced conditioner made for hair that has been lightened like Pureology’s Perfect 4 Platinum Conditioner.
2. Use a heat protectant before blow drying, flat ironing or curling. The heat can not only damage your hair (especially lightened hair) but it can also fade or brown-out color faster.
3. Use a moisturizing mask once a week. I love Redken’s Blonde Idol Mask.

I’m talking about makeovers! Spring is in the hair and if you’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to try a new look, I say go for it! We all know that when we have a bad hair day or if we’re not particularly thrilled about the current look we have, it has a negative impact on our confidence and self esteem. A makeover can be a great way to become more open minded and discover new things about yourself too! Big changes like going from blonde to brunette or long to short as well as small changes like the addition of a side swept fringe or a few highlights around the face can make a world of a difference. So get out of your comfort zone and let the magic happen. The road to self discovery is a long one, why not look beautiful on the way there?
How do you find the right look for you? How do you know what shade of red to go for or whether or not you can “pull off” the copper highlights or textured bob you saw online? Consulting with your stylist is a very crucial step to any makeover. It helps us determine what styles are realistic for your lifestyle, what colors work with your skin tone, the steps we must take to get you from point A to point B and so forth. Coming into the appointment with images of colors or hairstyles you like (even if you only like a part of a certain look) helps immensely. It makes sure you are both on the same page. After consulting, your stylist will give you their professional suggestions. I like to refer to it as creating a road map. Things we take into consideration are: facial shape, head shape, skin tone, skin undertone, eye color, etc. A thorough consultation can be the difference between a look to love and a look to lose.
We have been seeing a lot of celebrity hair transformations lately. Kim Kardashian’s famous leap to the blonde side and more recently, Christina Aguilera’s switch from blonde bombshell to sultry brunette have been all over social media lately. Such a drastic color change is bound to turn some heads. If you’re looking to flip the script this is the answer.
Popping up everywhere are the bold, fun, vibrant colors. Katy Perry, Nicole Richie, Kelly Osbourne, Kylie Jenner and now Hilary Duff have all been sporting the bright fashion colors that we all can’t stop looking at. I know it’s not plausible for all of us to go head first and dye all of our hair unnatural colors but if you’re a little curious there are more temporary options to test the waters. Redken’s Color Rebel Hair Makeup makes it possible to paint a little bit (or a lot of bit) of funky color onto your hair. Available in violet, red, coral, pink and gold, it rinses out after two shampoos. Another option is extensions. You can purchase individual wefts of colorful hair to add into your hairdo for those days you are really needing some excitement.
A big change can be a hard pill to swallow but, after taking that leap of faith and seeing yourself in a completely different way, it can be a very fulfilling experience. Going from hair down to your waist to hair above your shoulders sounds terrifying and panic-attack-inducing but you’d be surprised. When you get a truly flattering haircut, it will make all of your best features come alive. Right now the “Lob” is gaining mass popularity. It’s a wonderful compromise when you’re wanting to try a short-er cut without going in full force.
All over color changes are some of the most fun appointments for the stylist but the most stressful for the client. But just like a good haircut can bring out your best features, good color makes everything POP! Your eyes can look bigger and brighter and your skin can look more radiant from a color that compliments you perfectly. I love creating new looks for clients and giving them what they need to feel confident and discover new positive attitudes they may not have had about themselves before.
But just like big changes, small changes (adding a few highlights around the face or adding a side swept fringe) can create a whole new look. Plus, these services tend to be quick, easy and generally less expensive. Spring time always brings the need to have a lighter and brighter style. Women often come in thinking they need a full head of highlights to achieve it when in actuality they would look much better with just a few highlights. This can take a boring one dimensional color to a whole other level. It gives you that sun kissed look that is very natural and soft but it also gives you that change that you have been dying for. A color gloss is another easy way to add a little something to your look. They are semi permanent and can add just a little boost of tone and shine. The color gradually fades, taking away the commitment permanent color requires.
Lastly, we can’t forget about the guys. The male grooming industry has seen a sudden boom in the past few years. Men are becoming more and more interested in not only getting a haircut but getting a look. I tell my male clients, when you sit in my hair I am not just cutting your hair, I am taking your personal style and creating a look that portrays it. It’s becoming a lot more than “#2 on the sides and finger length on top”. Men are becoming more daring and more expressive and I love it! Guys, don’t be afraid to leave the haircut you’ve had for the past 10 years at the door when you come in because I guarantee when you leave you will feel more confident than ever.
So, if you’re still wondering if you should dye your hair or cut it all off or if you have been feeling the urge for change, there’s no time like the present. Grab the bull by the horns and take the plunge. I’m sure you will be happy that you did and you might even learn a thing or two about yourself in the process.

Exciting Things Are Happening!
With 2015 in full swing there are so many new and exciting things happening at Rio!
We officially have Redken’s brand-spankin’-new Blonde Idol color line. The line includes high-lift conditioning hair color, a blue oil lightening system and the base breakers. What this means for you is lighter, brighter blondes without the brassiness and without the damage! Each product in this line is ultra conditioning so your hair is not left dry and lifeless but bright, lustrous and healthy.
“Sombre”, balayage, high lights and all over blonde will never go out of style.
All over Instagram and Pinterest are pictures of beautifully lightened, perfectly blended blondes. People, especially those of us with naturally darker hair, think it’s impossible to have that hair on their heads. That is, while having hair still attached to their head! This color line makes it possible. Now, don’t get me wrong, if you have jet black hair, don’t think you’ll be a platinum blonde just like that! But you can gradually become lighter and brighter without the dreaded brassy orange monster showing it’s ugly face all over your head.
We have the technology!
Each product in this line includes new technology that include: cationic polymers designed to smooth the hair fibers, violet leaf extract to condition and optimize the health of the hair and ceramides that repair and seal the hair to protect the color.
What this means for you is the beautiful lasting blonde you want without the dryness other methods can cause. Also, with haircolor that lifts and tones at the same time and a base breaker that only takes 10 minutes to process you won’t feel like you’ve spent an eternity in the salon.
Check out these results!!:

Rio Takes Las Vegas!
This past week seven of our amazingly talented stylists traveled to the FABULOUS Las Vegas to attend the 2015 Redken Symposium. This is the largest single-manufacturer education event in the world! They left wide-eyed and eager to learn and returned more motivated and inspired than ever!
Kris, Laura, Megan, Melissa, Misty, Shelby and myself (Jess) embarked on this adventure last Friday January 23rd. Once we arrived we immediately began exploring this beautiful city. To us there was so much to see and do and so little time!
The first night we were there truly was a magical night because one of our stylists received the surprise of her life! Our little Meggy GOT ENGAGED! It really was the most romantic thing I have ever witnessed. We are so happy for her and cannot wait to be with her every step of the way!
After a couple of days of exploring Sunday rolled around and it was time to get to work! We all visited Sam Villa’s Hairshow, an amazing blow dry bar, to get #redkenready for the opening event that night.
Of course we had the best seats in the house for the show! It was an amazing display of all the educators, artists and models we would be seeing and learning from the following days in class. I must say, when Redken throws a party, they REALLY throw a party! They pulled out all the stops and made it incredible.
The next day classes began and we were given the opportunity to learn from the most innovative, talented and creative artists from around the world!
We also were able to bring back some goodies! We have a sneak peak at some new products Redken will be releasing this year. We are very excited to be ahead of the game with new styling and color products that will take your hair to the next level.
I know I don’t speak for myself when I say I cannot wait for Redken Symposium 2017! This was one of the greatest experiences of my life and now I’m ready to practice what I’ve learned and create some truly incredible hair!
