Watch our step-by-step tutorial on how to get the perfect Beachy Waves with Redken Artist and Rio’s own Sami Skinner.
Begin by preparing your hair with Redken’s Beach Envy Shampoo and Conditioner. For Beachy Waves, follow this up by treating your hair with Redken’s Wave Aid. Be sure not to brush or even run your fingers through your hair while this product is drying – you do not want to end up with a big, frizzy mess!
Once the product is dry, you can enhance your waves even further. If you have naturally have smaller waves, then your should use a smaller iron. For bigger beachy waves, use a bigger size – the point it take what you already have and enhance your waves further.
Look at the surface of your hair for lazy or flat sections. These are the areas you want to use the curling iron on. Grab one inch sections at a time to curl. You only need to focus on the visible areas to enhance and give definition to your hair.
The final step to achieve the perfect Beachy Waves is to finish with Redken’s Wax Blast. This will add texture and shine to your look. Hit it with the blow dryer for the Wax Blast to take effect. Again, you don’t want to brush your hair through during this step. You can just lift chunks of your hair to make sure the heat hits everywhere.
We hope you enjoyed our first video hair tutorial! All of the products used are available for purchase at the studio located at 9823 Tapestry Park Circle, Suite 8 in Jacksonville, Florida.

RIO Hair Studio had the great pleasure of hosting Redken’s Education Artistic Director, Chris Baran!
Chris Baran taught our hair stylists so many amazing things! From tips and tricks about how to better brush, part, cut and curl to improving out technique, Chris gave us new skills to make us all better stylists. Every single person in the room learned something new in class that we could use as soon as our clients took a seat in the chair.
By making us take a look at the bigger picture, the first part of class was about how we could achieve our goals. Chris made us examine who we are as hair stylists, who we want to become and how to make that happen.
We always think of RIO as a family and learning together cemented that. Chris made sure this was a hands-on, interactive experience for everyone. Throughout class we were bouncing ideas off each other, explaining and re-explaining new techniques to each other as well as cheering each other on.
It was so important for RIO Hair Studio to host this class. We believe that one of the major factors for the studio’s success is owner Misty’s emphasis on continuing education for each and every stylist. This focus on professionalism ensures that each stylist is well-trained, well-certified, and always up to date on the latest styles, procedures and processes. This is how we are equipped to provide the best service to clients – we can assure each client will receive the best advice about precision cuts, the most useful products, and the appropriate treatments and techniques for their hair to keep it healthy and strong.
We cannot thank Chris enough for sharing his wisdom, skills and humor with us!

Summer is heating up in Jacksonville! Here are our favorite beach hair looks to make sure our hair matches our favorite summer destination.
Easy Beach Hair
What to do after spending time enjoying a dip in the Atlantic Ocean with no easy access to a blow dryer? Twist your hair up while its still wet and add a fun hair clip. Once its dry, you can take it down and voila….instant beach waves! For the full steps, go here.
For beach waves when you haven’t actually been out to any of Jacksonville’s beaches, follow these steps from Redken and even the islanders will be jealous.
Thick, Summer Braid
There are so many great ways to style braids in your hair but this is one of my favorites. This thick, relaxed braid will keep the heat off your next and looks good at beach or for a night out. The key is that after you’ve braided all your hair gradually to one side, pull at the braid to give it more thickness and a relaxed look.
One Minute Knotted Half-Up
Simple, quick and easy but gives your hair that extra little bit of magic. Plus, it keeps your hair out of your face when facing that ocean breeze.
Sometimes we don’t want to style our hair because our destination means that any effort will be ruined – like when you’re cruising down 1st to meet up with some friends at the beach. That’s why this hairstyle is perfect – a minimal amount of effort that a lot more fun that a regular ponytail and practical enough to keep your hair out of your face – even with the crosswinds.

I’m talking about makeovers! Spring is in the hair and if you’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to try a new look, I say go for it! We all know that when we have a bad hair day or if we’re not particularly thrilled about the current look we have, it has a negative impact on our confidence and self esteem. A makeover can be a great way to become more open minded and discover new things about yourself too! Big changes like going from blonde to brunette or long to short as well as small changes like the addition of a side swept fringe or a few highlights around the face can make a world of a difference. So get out of your comfort zone and let the magic happen. The road to self discovery is a long one, why not look beautiful on the way there?
How do you find the right look for you? How do you know what shade of red to go for or whether or not you can “pull off” the copper highlights or textured bob you saw online? Consulting with your stylist is a very crucial step to any makeover. It helps us determine what styles are realistic for your lifestyle, what colors work with your skin tone, the steps we must take to get you from point A to point B and so forth. Coming into the appointment with images of colors or hairstyles you like (even if you only like a part of a certain look) helps immensely. It makes sure you are both on the same page. After consulting, your stylist will give you their professional suggestions. I like to refer to it as creating a road map. Things we take into consideration are: facial shape, head shape, skin tone, skin undertone, eye color, etc. A thorough consultation can be the difference between a look to love and a look to lose.
We have been seeing a lot of celebrity hair transformations lately. Kim Kardashian’s famous leap to the blonde side and more recently, Christina Aguilera’s switch from blonde bombshell to sultry brunette have been all over social media lately. Such a drastic color change is bound to turn some heads. If you’re looking to flip the script this is the answer.
Popping up everywhere are the bold, fun, vibrant colors. Katy Perry, Nicole Richie, Kelly Osbourne, Kylie Jenner and now Hilary Duff have all been sporting the bright fashion colors that we all can’t stop looking at. I know it’s not plausible for all of us to go head first and dye all of our hair unnatural colors but if you’re a little curious there are more temporary options to test the waters. Redken’s Color Rebel Hair Makeup makes it possible to paint a little bit (or a lot of bit) of funky color onto your hair. Available in violet, red, coral, pink and gold, it rinses out after two shampoos. Another option is extensions. You can purchase individual wefts of colorful hair to add into your hairdo for those days you are really needing some excitement.
A big change can be a hard pill to swallow but, after taking that leap of faith and seeing yourself in a completely different way, it can be a very fulfilling experience. Going from hair down to your waist to hair above your shoulders sounds terrifying and panic-attack-inducing but you’d be surprised. When you get a truly flattering haircut, it will make all of your best features come alive. Right now the “Lob” is gaining mass popularity. It’s a wonderful compromise when you’re wanting to try a short-er cut without going in full force.
All over color changes are some of the most fun appointments for the stylist but the most stressful for the client. But just like a good haircut can bring out your best features, good color makes everything POP! Your eyes can look bigger and brighter and your skin can look more radiant from a color that compliments you perfectly. I love creating new looks for clients and giving them what they need to feel confident and discover new positive attitudes they may not have had about themselves before.
But just like big changes, small changes (adding a few highlights around the face or adding a side swept fringe) can create a whole new look. Plus, these services tend to be quick, easy and generally less expensive. Spring time always brings the need to have a lighter and brighter style. Women often come in thinking they need a full head of highlights to achieve it when in actuality they would look much better with just a few highlights. This can take a boring one dimensional color to a whole other level. It gives you that sun kissed look that is very natural and soft but it also gives you that change that you have been dying for. A color gloss is another easy way to add a little something to your look. They are semi permanent and can add just a little boost of tone and shine. The color gradually fades, taking away the commitment permanent color requires.
Lastly, we can’t forget about the guys. The male grooming industry has seen a sudden boom in the past few years. Men are becoming more and more interested in not only getting a haircut but getting a look. I tell my male clients, when you sit in my hair I am not just cutting your hair, I am taking your personal style and creating a look that portrays it. It’s becoming a lot more than “#2 on the sides and finger length on top”. Men are becoming more daring and more expressive and I love it! Guys, don’t be afraid to leave the haircut you’ve had for the past 10 years at the door when you come in because I guarantee when you leave you will feel more confident than ever.
So, if you’re still wondering if you should dye your hair or cut it all off or if you have been feeling the urge for change, there’s no time like the present. Grab the bull by the horns and take the plunge. I’m sure you will be happy that you did and you might even learn a thing or two about yourself in the process.

Want that fresh out of the ocean beach hair? Bring out your natural summer beach waves with Redken’s sea salt-infused texturizing spray, inspired by the casual-cool style of surfers. This medium control hair texturizing sea spray for beachy waves for that fresh out of the ocean look. To use, shake well and mist through damp hair in sections, allow to air dry or diffuse.
Hot Tip!: To achieve loose waves in straight hair, and enhanced definition in wavy hair, mist liberally onto damp hair and scrunch. Continue to reapply until desired texture is achieved. Mist fashion waves 07 on damp hair and air-dry, then re-apply throughout the day to re-animate wave.
Beach Waves Spray has gained popularity lately; however many of the sea salt sprays are also drying to the hair, as salt pulls moisture and natural oils out. Be sure to use a conditioning shampoo and conditioner by Redken or Pureology. Redken 07 Fashion waves uses Magnesium Sulfate (aka Epsom Salt) instead of Sea Salt, this makes it less drying and it contains some natural oils (aka Conditioner) to replenish your hair.
